Balangan Beach is a place where emerald waves shimmer on dark sand, and sunsets set the sky ablaze so that breath catches.
Its feature – unusual landscapes, persistent sense of seclusion and powerful energy attracting surfers, romantics and all who seek more than just a sunbed under a palm.
Description
Imagine a wide arc of dark gray (in places golden) sand, framed by chaotic limestone rocks and cliffs covered with shrubs.
The shore here is quite long, but during high tide a significant part shrinks.
Sand sometimes mixed with fine pebbles.
Cleanliness good, especially early in the day.
Location
Balangan sits on the very "nose" of the Bukit Peninsula, in Pecemutan area, about 20 km from Ngurah Rai Airport or Uluwatu. Nearest significant landmark – famous Dreamland Beach.
How to get there
- Scooter. Most popular and flexible option. Rental from 80K IDR/day. Roads good, but last stretch – narrow descent to beach. Important: Be careful, sharp turns and darting animals occur. Parking near beach charges small fee (~5K IDR per bike).
- Taxi. Convenient from tourist zones (Kuta, Seminyak), but return call after sunset may be difficult (surge pricing may apply). Cost from 150K IDR from Kuta.
- Tours. Our team of Russian-speaking guides can both deliver you here (transfer) and pick you up for any excursions. Contact us!
What to do
- Surfing. Most popular activity here! Left-hand reef break for experienced (high, powerful waves) at western end and slightly softer sections for confident beginners closer to center. Board rental from 100K IDR/hour.
- Relaxation. Lying, enjoying the surf roar – perfect! Can also do yoga or meditate at sunrise.
- Exploration. Walk along paths along cliffs! Most breathtaking views open from viewpoints opposite cafes.
- Enjoy sunset. Highlight of the program! As evening falls, the beach transforms. Sky flashes fantastic shades of orange, pink and purple. Recommend arriving hour-hour and a half before sunset, take a spot on cliffs near cafes and prepare camera :)
- Instagram session. Rocks, endless ocean, silhouettes of surfers on waves – content creates itself, just need to shoot.
- Food. Visit several local cafes and restaurants with ocean views, hidden on cliffs at beach edges. Prices slightly above street, but justified.
When to visit?
Ideal – in dry season (April - October). Minimum rain, clear skies, best waves. In rainy season (November - March) can be cloudy, humid, roads washed out, waves unpredictable, but fewer people.- Morning (until 11:00): for calm, swimming, surfing, walks.
- Evening (after 16:00): exclusively for sunsets and atmospheric dinners. During day it can be very hot and minimal shade!
Tourist tips
What to bring:- Water (water more expensive on beach!).
- Sunscreen (ultra-high protection!) and headwear. Sun on Bukit merciless.
- Comfortable sports shoes (sneakers/trekking sandals). Road to beach steep, rocks sharp, can't climb rocks in flip-flops.
- Towel, swimsuit.
- Money for food and way back.
- Safety. Swim only in calm morning hours in zones without surfers.
- Crowds. During sunset and weekends can be crowded near restaurants on cliffs. For quiet come at dawn.
- Prices. Don't be afraid to bargain for sunbeds!
- Time. Plan minimum 3-4 hours to leisurely climb cliffs and wait for sunset.
Frequently asked questions
Is it difficult to reach Balangan by public transport?
Yes, very. No regular buses directly to beach. Optimal – own rented transport (bike) or taxi/tour.
Are there dangerous currents/waves for swimming?
Yes. Main beach – surf zone with strong surf and currents. Swim carefully only in morning calm and in "corners" near rocks if no warning signs (red/yellow flag).
Is entry paid and how much is sunbed rental?
Entry to beach itself – free. Paid bike parking (~5K IDR).
Umbrella + 2 sunbeds rental usually costs 50,000 - 100,000 IDR for whole day.
Can you stay on beach after sunset?
You can stay, but infrastructure (restaurants, rentals) on beach closes soon after sunset. Becomes very dark, and road up the hill unlit. We don't recommend.
What beaches nearby?
Within walking distance along coast:
- Bingin (Bingin Beach). Steep descent, cool surfing and cozy lofts.
- Padang Padang. Famous beach from "Eat, Pray, Love", picturesque rocks, division into public zone and famous (paid) lagoon.
- Dreamland. Wider sandy beach with developed infrastructure in neighboring bay.
- Uluwatu. Another cult surf spot with temple nearby on cliff.
