    Padang Padang Beach
    Attractions/Beaches

Imagine a narrow entrance, like a hidden portal in the rocks, leading into a fairytale world. White pebbles underfoot, sparkling in the sun, emerald waves crashing against spectacular limestone cliffs, and a sense of mystery, almost sacred, right in the heart of Bali.

All this is Padang Padang Beach – an amazing place where the power of nature easily combines with the intimate atmosphere of a cove that has left an indelible mark on the hearts of travelers and in pop culture history. This is more than just a beach – it’s an unforgettable experience!

    Description

Padang Padang is a compact podium beach located literally at the foot of the world-famous Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple in the south of Bali (a good hundred steps down!).

Contrary to popular belief, it is not sandy, but pebble-sandy: right at the water’s edge there is often fine white pebbles, and further in and higher up – sand admixtures.

Its main features are a narrow slit-entrance (a kind of tunnel or gate) and a small picturesque cove protected by sheer cliffs on both sides.

    History

The beach got its name from the nearby temple, and in Balinese Padang means field or temple, adding a sacred touch to the place.

However, Padang Padang gained worldwide fame thanks to the film "Eat, Pray, Love" (2010), specifically the cult beach scene with Javier Bardem. This finally brought the beach out of the category of local secrets into the top must-see list in Bali, giving it an eerily enchanting aura of a place of power and change.

    Why visit?

    • Famous "gates". Walking through the narrow, almost mystical stone passage is already an adventure and a great shot.
    • Seclusion in the cove. Despite its popularity and small size, inside the cove reigns a pacifying and slightly detached atmosphere.
    • Spectacular landscapes. Powerful waves breaking with foam against the shore and rocks create a dynamic and captivating spectacle.
    • Open-air photo session. From epic views of the cove from above (before the descent) to silhouettes of rocks and sunsets over the ocean – the photos will turn out just right!

    What to do?

    • Surfing (for professionals only!).
    • Beach relaxation (with caveats). Sunbathe, enjoy the sound of the surf, watch the surfers. Swimming is limited here due to strong and dangerous currents, rocks and reefs near the shore.
    • Watching the sunset. When the sun sets over the ocean, the rocks of Padang Padang cove are painted in golden and crimson tones. Enjoy the moment!
    • Nature’s beauty.
Important! For snorkeling, this is not the best location in Bali. Open ocean, strong currents, waves and rocky bottom complicate the process and make it dangerous. There is a reef, but to see it you need to swim far from the shore into a potentially dangerous zone, which we do not recommend.

    Infrastructure

    • Entrance is paid. Entrance fee (approx. ~15-30k IDR per person). The cost includes access to the beach and parking (sometimes parking is paid separately for a small fee).
    • Parking.
    • Descent. Be prepared for a long and quite steep staircase of ~135 steps! A plus - there are railings to rest on :) The climb back up is even harder. Important:
    • Showers/toilets/changing rooms are located at the top, before the descent, paid. Quality is average, basic (shower - tap with cold water). There are no facilities on the beach itself.
    • Sun loungers and umbrellas are practically absent on the beach itself due to its small area and shore character (pebbles). Sometimes enterprising locals offer simple mats. Better to bring your own towel and mat.
    • Food and drinks.warungs (small cafes) and several simple restaurants/cafes with popular menus (drinks, smoothies, nasi goreng, mie goreng) are located at the top, near the entrance and parking. On the beach – a couple of stalls with water/drinks.

    How to get there?

    • Location:
    • From Kuta / Seminyak / Legian:45-60 minutes (depending on traffic).
    • From the airport:
    • From Uluwatu:
      Transport:
    • Scooter or Motorcycle.
    • Taxi.
    • Car rental with driver.

    Tourist Tips

    Time to visit

The best time to visit is early morning (8-10 am), when there are the fewest people and good light for photos.

Sunset – the main influx of visitors, but worth enduring for the atmosphere. Avoid the hottest peak of the day (11:00-15:00).

    What to bring

    • Sufficient supply of water.
    • High SPF waterproof sunscreen, hat, sunglasses.
    • Shoes for rocks/water (beach slippers with reef soles), as pebbles can be hot and uncomfortable for feet, plus coral rocks and sea urchins are common here.
    • Cash rupiah for entrance, parking, shower, snacks. Cards rarely accepted.
      Towel, beach mat.
    • Camera/smartphone with full charge!

    Safety

    • Current
    • Waves.
    • Monkeys.
    • Surfing.
    • Clothing.

    FAQ

    Is beach entrance paid

Yes, entrance is paid. Approximate price ~15,000 - 30,000 IDR per person (better to check on site).

Where is the entrance to the famous "tunnel"?

The "tunnel" or "gates" is exactly the beginning of the staircase leading down to the beach.

Impossible to miss – a narrow crack in the rocks before the stairs down.

Can I come here with children?

Descent/ascent on the stairs is difficult for little legs, walking on the pebble shore is inconvenient, full swimming is not possible.

Better consider more child-friendly beaches if the goal is to swim properly.

    Conclusion

Padang Padang Beach – is a contradictory, but definitely memorable soul of the Bukit.

This is not a place for calm swimming or canonical beach relaxation.

This is a space saturated with strong-spirited surfers, a palette of intensely acting sunset colors, sounds of powerful surf and the unique shape of rocks.
